 February 10 Snow Update:

The latest forecast has 2 to 4 inches of snow falling this evening starting between 5 and 7 p.m. and ending very early tomorrow morning.

No snow emergency parking ban is necessary tonight.

We ask that, if possible, residents please move their cars off the street earlier than the 2 a.m. deadline required by the regular winter parking ban in place through the end of March. This will allow our DPW crews to get out earlier to salt and scrape streets if necessary. (Note that if more than 3 inches of snow falls and scraping is necessary, it’s noisy.)

Municipal Parking lots will remain open throughout the city. Click here for a map of the 13 citywide locations.

We anticipate the streets will be cleared by morning and that all city buildings will be open as scheduled tomorrow.

Stay safe and thank you for your cooperation – and your patience.

Mayor Marc C. Laredo

(Photo: At the Elliot Street DPW Yard this morning which is the primary
location for snow to be hauled away from city streets, parking lots and
sidewalks.)

Dear Friends,

The forecast looks like we may be hit with another 2 to 6 inches of snow
along with the frigid temperatures tonight. The snow accumulation is still
somewhat uncertain; we could get less – but – we could get more.
While we keep our eyes on the forecast, I want to let everyone know that we
may need to put another Snow Emergency Parking Ban into effect this
evening and into tomorrow.

If a ban is put into effect, I’ll send out an additional email update, the
information will be posted on our website at newtonma.gov, and on social
media as soon as we make that
determination.

Please also know that should we need to issue the parking ban, municipal
lots will be available because of the moderate snow accumulation estimates.

(Photo: Teams from Public Works, Fire, Police, Parks and Recreation, Information Technology, and the Mayor's Office all took some time today to complete a snowstorm "after-action" meeting. We covered how we could improve our communication processes, continuing snow cleanup efforts, our 311 system, and much more. We would like to thank our residents, businesses, and City Councilors for their continued feedback.Your collective thoughts, concerns, and suggestions are helping us refine and improve.)

The Snow Clean-Up Continues

Following this record-breaking winter storm (reportedly the 8th biggest in Boston area history), DPW crews are still out clearing snow and will spend the next several days and nights removing snow on streets back to the curbs to make them wider. We’ll be using snow blowers, so the snow shouldn’t be pushed back into driveways and sidewalks that have already been shoveled.

(Chris Hunter out plowing in Newton Centre this morning.)

Crews are also scraping and salting throughout the city – including on our smaller side streets.

DPW is also continuing to respond to all 311 storm requests.

Efforts to clear snow from village centers is ongoing and will resume this evening beginning at 8 p.m. Crews plan to complete work in Newtonville, Newton Centre, and along Washington Street, and also may address Newton Corner if time allows. Please know, this work can be noisy.

Thanks again to our DPW and Parks & Recreation staff, and contractors who are working hard day and night to clean up after this storm.

We appreciate the community’s patience as this extensive cleanup effort continues.

See you around the city,

Mayor Marc

Message from Mayor Marc Laredo:

The dig out continues as more snow is expected this afternoon.

Thanks to Our Crews for Their Ongoing Efforts

Our DPW crews and contractors have been out plowing our roads continuously through the night, some on 16-hour shifts. After a four-hour break, most will be back on the road later today.

The work these plow operators do is much harder than it looks. I rode along last night with DPW Yard Maintenance Superintendent Al Secinaro for a couple hours on his route. It was cold and dark, the snow was falling, it was bumpy, and although I was riding shotgun, this work is usually done alone. Our DPW workers and the contractors we enlist during snowstorms work long hours and through the night handling these huge plow trucks. It’s really impressive and I want to say a huge thank you to all of them.

Our Priorities in the Next Phase of the Storm

As snow falls, our first priority is to that the ensure the streets are passable throughout the city for out first responders - police, firefighters, and EMTs because we never know where the next emergency may be.

Once the snow ends (in the case of this storm, it’s not forecasted to fully end until late tonight) the plow operators will work to clear the streets “curb to curb” to the extent possible. This will be no easy feat given the heavy snowfall we’ve experienced.

The next priority will be to move on to sidewalks, bus stops, intersections and crosswalks, school routes, and T stations. Snow also will need to be hauled away from parking lots and other areas. Please know that this hauling work often happens late into the night and can be noisy.

While it might seem like most of the storm is behind us, we have a lot of work yet to do. Please stay off the roads today if possible to make it easier, safer, and quicker for our first responders and our snow clearing teams to do their jobs.

Important Reminders:

• The Snow Emergency Parking Ban is still in effect. Check the website
at newtonma.gov for the most up to date information on when the parking
ban will be lifted.

• City Hall, the Newton Free Library and the Cooper Center, Jackson Homestead
and Durant-Kendrick House and Grounds are closed today. Stay tuned
to newtonma.gov for city building updates and newton.k12.ma.us for school
updates.

• Make sure to clear exhaust vents from direct vent gas furnace systems to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and check to make sure your carbon monoxide detectors are working as it is a silent, odorless killer.

• Our firefighters would be very grateful for your help in shoveling out fire hydrants near your home.

• Please help our DPW plow crews and contractors by not clearing your snow into the streets. It slows our plowing efforts. Also, if you know the people who plow your driveways, a gentle reminder to them would also be appreciated.

Clearing our Sidewalks

We have snow shoveling requirements in Newton to help keep sidewalks safe and walkable. Our snow shoveling ordinance requires all of us to clear the sidewalk in front of our homes within 24 hours once the snow stops falling. The official “end” of the storm will be after the snow stops tonight.

Updates about the timeline for shoveling, will be posted on the City’s website at newtonma.gov.

The City of Newton snow shoveling ordinance applies only to sidewalks that are paved or made of cement.

Waivers to our ordinance are available based on health and financial duress, or religious circumstances. For more information please visit

https://www.newtonma.gov/government/senior-services/general-services/sidewalk-snow-shoveling-exemptions

Property owners in business and commercial districts, or of residential buildings with four or more units, must have the sidewalk in front of their property cleared within 12 hours of a storm’s end.

What Happens if the Sidewalk Isn’t cleared?

City employees will respond to complaints reported about uncleared sidewalks
reported to our 311 system. Property owners receive a warning the first time their sidewalk is left uncleared and is reported into the City’s 311 system. The next complaint will result in a fine. Fines for residential properties are $50 and
will be repeated every 24 hours until the sidewalk is cleared

Sunday January 25, 2026

In light of the forecast, a snow emergency parking ban will go into effect in the City of Newton today at noon, Sunday, January 25.

  • All cars parked on the streets or in the municipal or schools parking lots must be moved by noon today or be subject to towing.

  • Trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day the week of January 26

  • If you lose power, call Eversource at 1-800-592-2000.
