Dear Newton Resident,

The Newton Department of Public Works will be implementing a comprehensive unidirectional flushing program designed to remove tuberculation and sediment from water mains. The program will start this year flushing areas south of Route 9.

The water mains will be flushed to ensure continued dependable water service and excellent water quality. The program involves closing water gates and forcing water flow at high velocities, which scours the water mains and improves water quality.
During flushing operations in your neighborhood, you may notice some short-term impacts like increases in the color and iron level in your cold water or some fluctuations in your water pressure. Although harmless to your health, you should avoid using water for household purposes during flushing in your neighborhood as it may cause minor staining of fixtures and laundry. If you do need to use your tap water during flushing in your neighborhood, allow your cold water to run from a faucet nearest to your water meter until your water becomes clean. Avoid using any hot water during flushing in your neighborhood to prevent sediment accumulation in your hot water tank. After the water main in your neighborhood is flushed, if you are still experiencing poor water flow pressure, please notify the Utilities Division at (617) 796-1640 to report the potential low-pressure issue.

Flushing work is anticipated to start after April 1st and continue for approximately three months. The Contractor conducting this work is Hydra Tech Inc.  A full-time representative from the City’s engineering consulting firm, Tata & Howard, Inc. will be on site with the flushing crew.
