Street Conditions
We understand there are concerns regarding patches and potholes. The City of Newton Public Works Department will closely monitor conditions on Ward Street and Centre Street throughout construction and will address any areas requiring immediate repair. Once MWRA work is complete, the City plans to repave:
Ward Street (Waverley Avenue to Centre Street)
Centre Street (Commonwealth Avenue to Mill Street)
Phase l (completed)
The Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) will be replacing its water main and the City of Newton’s water main. Both mains were installed in 1877 and are deteriorated. The water main project began in March 2022 with an anticipated completion of March 2023.
The (MWRA) began replacing the water main under Ward Street from Manet Road to Waverley Avenue as well as replacing all residential water services connected to the water main.
Waverley Avenue
The Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) completed the cleaning and lining the portion of Waverley Ave near Durant Street to Washington Street to St. James Circle across the Massachusetts Turnpike to St. James Street in October 2022. Additionally, the water main will be replaced from Durant Street to Ward Street and is scheduled for August 2022 to January 2023.
The MWRA is also currently in the process of replacing the water main on Waverley Avenue from Durant Street to Ward Street.
The MWRA expects to complete the bulk of the water main work by the end of this year (weather permitting), and the entire project completed by the spring of 2023.
Once all the work by the MWRA is completed we look forward to restoring curbing and repaving Ward Street and Waverley Avenue.
