Project Description

The Elliot Street Traffic Calming Project has been in planning, design, and construction for several years. The project was initiated in response to advocacy by neighborhood residents for traffic calming measures to address safety issues. Newton DPW collected and evaluated traffic and safety data, and determined that the segment of Elliot Street between Linden Street and Circuit Avenue had high traffic volumes, high speeds, and a high crash rate, and was therefore a top priority for implementation of traffic calming measures.

In 2020, Newton DPW began working with the Upper Falls neighborhood, elected officials, other City of Newton departments, and other stakeholders to develop a design for this segment of roadway that would slow traffic and improve safety. After a comprehensive alternatives analysis, design, and public process, Newton DPW staff and our design engineer developed a proposed design approach for the Elliot Street Traffic Calming Project. This design included raised bicycle lanes through the Elliot Street curve in order to narrow the motor vehicle travel lanes, slow vehicle speeds, and enhance safety for all roadway users; a reconfigured intersection at Elliot Street/Mechanic Street; and a number of other roadway redesign, pedestrian safety, accessibility, and traffic calming measures.

 We are working with a new design engineer, who has developed several new options that were presented at a community meeting on June 25, 2026. Meeting materials are below; once we have identified a proposed redesign concept, we will review it with community stakeholders.
