  1. Register for Advising at  the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center at UMass Mount Ida in Newton. The Center's staff offer a range of free and confidential services for small businesses.
  2. Read the Business Guide published by the U.S. Small Business Administration which covers planning, launching, managing and growing your venture. You can also download the Small Business Resource Guide.
  3. See Starting a Business by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for guidance on choosing a business structure, filing requirements, and other resources.
  4. See the Corporations Division of the Secretary of the Commonwealth. Any business operation must file Articles of Organization with the State.

  • "Pop-up" retail resources: Newton-based retail consultant UpNext offers a free webinar and a 25-page workbook on this temporary-storefront strategy to test retail concepts.
  • Small Business Tool Kit. This free resource provides an overview of leasing a brick-and-mortar location. Created by the retail real estate consulting firm Graffito SP, which was founded by a Newton resident.

Legal Assistance

  • Boston College Law School: Community Enterprise Clinic can provide legal guidance on business entity formation, employment, non-competes, lease negotiation, and regulatory issues. The Clinic represents small businesses, entrepreneurs, and nonprofit organizations in the Greater Boston area, if the client cannot afford private legal help.
  • Harvard Law School: Transactional Law Clinics offer guidance on business formation; contracts; negotiation; financing; buying, selling, and leasing real state; and regulatory issues. The Clinics provide assistance to individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and community based-organizations engaged in commercial or economic development activities. 
  • Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice: advocacy for education, equity, and economic empowerment.
  • US Department of Justice's Executive Office for Immigration Review offers a Pro Bono Legal Service.
  • Volunteer Lawyers Project provides free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals in Greater Boston. See the Get Help page. The site also has a list of emergency hotlines and other legal resources.

In Massachusetts, manufacturers are entitled to a 3% investment tax credit on appreciable assets, an exemption from municipal personal property taxes on equipment and fixtures, and an exemption to sales tax for the purchase of equipment used directly and exclusively in the manufacturing process.
