Permits & Licenses

To determine which local permits and licenses your business may need to obtain through the City of Newton, start by contacting Inspectional Services, (617) 796-1060, isd@newtonma.gov

Local requirements differ based on the type of business. For example, an accounting firm in commercial office may need only a Business Certificate from the City Clerk. Restaurant operators may need several permits and licenses from multiple City departments.

Online Applications

Newton manages almost all commercial permitting processes online. Create a NewGov user account to submit and update application forms and support documents. NewGov is open 24/7.

On NewGov's Workflow tab, you'll find a flowchart of application status, approval steps completed, steps remaining, and any fees paid.

Messaging within NewGov enables applicants and City staff to ask questions and provide updates. Every comment is time-and-date stamped and stored in a conversation thread for easy reference. No more digging through email messages.
