Subsidized Housing Inventory (SHI)
The Subsidized Housing Inventory (SHI) is a statewide database that tracks affordable housing units for purposes of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Permit Law (Chapter 40B). The inventory includes a variety of affordable housing types, not just Chapter 40B developments, including public housing, nonprofit and housing trust developments, deed-restricted homes, and qualifying market-rate rental units in Chapter 40B projects. SHI totals change over time as new eligible units are added, affordability restrictions expire, and census housing unit counts are updated.
