What are the Local Historic District Commissions?
Newton has four (4) established Local Historic Districts: Auburndale, Chestnut Hill, Newton Upper Falls, and Newtonville. These are areas that exhibit historic or architectural value that are distinctive and encouraged for preservation.
The districts were established by the property owners, who wanted to protect and honor the area around them. Living in a historic district provides the unique opportunity to be a steward for a piece of history within the Village! The Local Historic District was established by the neighborhood to protect it and have members that are residents. The Historic District Commission for each neighborhood operates under local ordinance and Chapter 40C of the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The Commission has review over alterations proposed to the exterior of the building. The design review process assures that changes will add to the district’s historic character and continues the intent of the district. The Commissions are not meant to prevent changes or new construction, but to ensure cohesion of architecture. The process is also not intended to be burdensome to property owners which is why resources such as the Design Guidelines, submission checklist, and FAQ are available. Additionally, the Preservation Planner will answer your questions and make sure you are set up for success.
