The ACROSS Trail System

In the summer and fall of 2025, with the help of volunteers, the Conservation office identified and mapped four ACROSS loop trails in Newton. Printable pdfs of these four walking routes are linked below.

ACROSS stands for Access to Conservation, Recreation, Open Space, and Schools. In Newton, ACROSS loops are recommended walking routes that showcase municipal parks and open spaces, aqueducts, historic village centers, and quiet streets. 

The ACROSS concept was inspired by Boston’s Emerald Necklace. In recent years, Lexington has developed an extensive ACROSS trail system. Read about Lexington’s project here.

What's Next for ACROSS

We hope to identify and map additional loops in other parts of the City. Eventually, we hope to install medallions to blaze each route, enabling easy wayfinding.
