This is helpful information for closing building, electrical, plumbing, and gas permits only which are overseen by the Inspectional Services Department (ISD).  Other city departments are responsible for other permits. For example, Health and Human Services, Fire, Engineering, and Parks, Recreation and Culture each have their own permits. Please contact those departments rather than the Inspectional Services Department to close those.

Reasons for old open ISD permits:

Old permits are not automatically closed, inspections are required to check the work completed.  It is the responsibility of the individual that obtains the permit to make arrangements for all inspections. The city is not responsible for tracking your permit through completion.  Inspectors review the applications submitted and approve and issue a permit to the contractor/property owner to complete a job.  Once the job is at certain stages inspections are required.  No one should pay for a project in full until the final inspection is completed and the permit is closed out in the permitting system.

How to find ISD permits on your property:

Property owners should be checking the permitting website click here to check that permits have been closed prior to making final payment to contractors.

Procedure for closing old open ISD permits:

Please be sure to check the entire list of open permits. Please have all electrical, plumbing, gas and other department permits closed before calling for a final inspection on the building permits.

Please be aware that we understand how frustrating it is to have old permits still open in the system. We also know it can take a while to be inspected. We understandably prioritize scheduling current work jobs before scheduling old projects.  The inspectors will give you specific information regarding the open permits for closure. We will make every effort to get these scheduled and closed as quickly as possible, but you will not move to the top of the list before an active job.

Who should call an inspector:

Please only call your inspector for assistance; calling more than one inspector will not get your permits closed any quicker. In fact, it may hold up the process for you. We ask that only the property owners or contractor of record call for assistance with the open permits.  We ask that real estate brokers instruct the property owners to reach out for inspections.  Inspectors will not schedule inspections for a broker, agent or new buyers.
