We are currently seeking applications for the position of City Librarian, the Director of the Newton Free Library. The successful candidate will be an innovative and forward-thinking library leader with deep public library experience and a proven record of collaboration, community engagement, and professional integrity.

What to Expect As a Candidate:
To the extent possible and allowable by law, the City of Newton maintains strict confidentiality during the talent acquisition process. This commitment is a reflection of our respect for interested candidates and our commitment to maintaining the integrity of the process.
As this is a position appointed by the Library Board of Trustees, the hiring process will be administered in accordance with the Open Meeting Law which means that interviews will be held both in executive and open session.
Below is a list of steps and critical dates that applicants should take note of.
- The position is currently posted and the deadline to apply is Friday, May 1, 2026.
- The Preliminary Screening Committee is meeting on Monday, May 4, 2026 to review resumes received through the posting deadline. Candidates who are selected for a preliminary screening interview will be notified by email no later than the end of the day on Tuesday, May 5th (we encourage candidates who have applied to keep checking their email for updates). Candidates selected will be provided with the date and time of their first interview; candidates not selected will also be notified.
- The Preliminary Screening Committee will be conducting the first round of preliminary screening interviews, in executive session, on ZOOM on Monday, May 11th throughout the day. If you apply for this position please hold this day. If you are selected you will be notified by email and provided ZOOM log in details.
- The Preliminary Screening Committee will be conducting a second and final round of preliminary interviews, in executive session, this time in person in Newton (Location to be determined), on Monday, May 18th. If you are selected for this interview you will be notified by email. After this meeting, the Preliminary Screening Committee will make recommendations of finalists for consideration before the Library Board of Trustees.
- Recommended finalists will undergo the City’s background check process (excluding CORI check and pre employment physical) prior to final interviews before the Trustees.
- The final interview round, before the Library Board of Trustees, in open session, will happen sometime in late May, early June (date is to be determined).
