Are you researching the history of the City of Newton or its residents, buildings, and organizations? Historic Newton is a good place to start. 

Historic Newton houses thousands of photographs, documents, maps, and other material related to Newton history in our Archives and Museum, dating from the 1700s to the present. 

We are happy to answer research questions via email, but due to staffing limitations, we are only able to allocate 30 minutes to each request. Researchers are welcome to make an appointment to visit the archives and use material from our collections. The Archives is accessible by appointment only. Published Histories of Newton

History of Newton by Francis Jackson (published 1854) contains biographical information on Newton’s founding families.

History of Newton by Samuel Francis Smith, D.D. (published in 1889) covers village histories, education, religious and civic life in Newton.

King’s Handbook of Newton by M.F. Sweetser (published in 1889) written as a travelogue through each village, with many lovely images.

Tercentenary History of Newton 1630-1930 by Henry K. Rowe (published in 1930) condenses Smith’s history and expands into the 20th century.
