Program Overview

The City of Newton's Human Services Division facilitates a summer internship program for Newton youth, ages 16-18.

The Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship Program provides a hands-on learning experience that pairs real world job experiences, with career competency and post-secondary skill building workshops.

With the assistance of MassHire Metro South/West and the YouthConnections program, the City of Newton offers participants an hourly wage, making this a true employment experience.

Each summer the Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship Program includes a June participant orientation as well as 6-8 weeks of part-time paid employment. Twenty to twenty-five participants are selected to receive about 20 hours of on-the-job experience in addition to 1-3 hours of career competency training per week.

The exact start and end date for each summer program session varies based on the school calendar and other factors.

Eligibility

This summer internship program is open to youth who live in Newton, attend Newton Public Schools or do both. Applicants must be between 16 and 18 years old at the start of the summer program. If applicants are older than 18 when the program begins, they must still be enrolled in high school or have graduated/be planning to graduate in the school year directly preceding the summer for which they are applying.

Additionally, some young people experience greater barriers to employment and workforce development opportunities. Newton’s YouthWorks Internship Program aims to support those individuals. Please click the green text below to find out if you meet these requirements.
