JOB SUBMISSIONS FOR SUMMER 2025
ARE NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED

Employer applications for the summer 2026 season will open in late 2025/early 2026.

Program Overview

The City of Newton's Youth & Young Adult Services Division facilitates the Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship Program for Newton youth aged 16-18.

The program provides hands-on learning that pairs real world job experiences, with career competency and post-secondary skill building workshops.

With the assistance of MassHire Metro South/West and the YouthConnections program, the City of Newton offers participants an hourly wage, making this a true employment experience.

Selected candidates will receive 20-25 hours of on-the-job experience per week in addition to 1-3 hours of career competency training each week. The exact start and end dates of the program vary each summer depending on the public school calendar and other factors.

This summer we are planning to run the program for 8 weeks - from the week of June 30th through the week of August 18th. The exact end date for each intern/employment opportunity is somewhat flexible to accommodate people going off to college, other seasonal transitions, etc.

For Employers

Our employers are the heart of the Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship Program. Without you, we could not offer this meaningful opportunity. There are countless success stories about interns who's lives have been changed through this program - because of you.

While employers will receive the benefit of additional professional help through this program, it is important to remember that the employer's role is also one of mentor and teacher. This program offers employers an opportunity to get the help they need while also giving back to the Newton community and supporting a young person on their career journey.

The Youth & Young Adult Services Division is here to support you, and your intern(s), for the duration of this program. Your success is our success. Please reach out for any reason at anytime. The best way to get in touch is to email Assistant Director, Meri Haas at mhaas@newtonma.gov.

The Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship program offers real work experience to Newton youth. To this end, employers must be able to provide the following:

  • A clear job description for each available position;
  • Three interview screening questions to assist with the selection process;
  • Assistance with final interviews and the intern selection process;
  • 20-25 hours of work per week for the duration of the program;
  • Appropriate training for intern, as needed;
  • A designated intern supervisor;
  • Regular check-ins with the intern during the program;
  • Confirmation of hours worked by signing off on weekly timesheets;
  • Regular communication with Youth & Young Adult Services Division.

This program aims to employ new participants each summer. For most participants this program is their first job experience. For this reason, the Youth & Young Adult Division requires participants to attend weekly career development workshops. Topic examples include, how to communicate with your boss, budgeting, self-care on the job, goal setting and organization.

  • Employers are required to schedule their intern's work hours around the career development workshop schedule. This schedule varies year to year and will be communicated as soon as it is finalized.

Employers and direct supervisors are also required to attend an hour-long zoom orientation prior to the start of the program. Returning employers can attend a shorter refresher orientation. Employer handbooks are provided.

Please note that you may not receive an intern. Applicants must apply for specific positions. If your job receives no applications or none that are a good fit, you may not be assigned an intern.

To learn more about the selection process, read the "Application & Selection Process" tab under the "Application & Selection Process" section below.

Employers are not required to hire program interns. All hiring and payroll will be handled by our partner organizations. Your only responsibility related to payroll will be to sign timesheets.

Application & Selection Process

Please direct all interested program applicants to this page.

Eligible participants are between 16 and 18 years of age at the start of the program (June), live in Newton or attend Newton Public Schools and are eligible to work in the United States.

It is important to note that some young people experience greater barriers to employment and workforce development opportunities. Newton’s YouthWorks Internship Program aims to support those individuals by prioritizing applicants who identify as or have experienced one or more of the following:

The child of a single, working parent; housing insecurity; low income; homeless or runaway youth; foster youth; received scores of levels 1 or 2 on the MCAS; having limited English skills; teen parent; juvenile arrest, been court- or gang-involved, been on probation, or involved in a Child Requiring Assistance (CRA) court case (previously known as CHINS); having a disability or special need; student on an IEP (Individual Education Plan); Involved with the Department of Youth Services; Involved with the Department of Children and Families; member of the LGBTQIA+ community (what does this mean?)

Each year many young people apply to the program. The Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship Program is able to offer internships to 20-25 Newton youth each summer. Unfortunately, space is limited and not all applicants can be accepted into the program.
