Program Overview

The City of Newton's Youth & Young Adult Services Division facilitates the Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship Program for Newton youth aged 16-18.

The program provides hands-on learning that pairs real world job experiences, with career competency and post-secondary skill building workshops.

With the assistance of Metro South/West Workforce Board and their YouthConnections program, the City of Newton offers participants an hourly wage, making this a true employment experience.

Selected candidates will receive 18-20 hours of on-the-job experience per week in addition to 1-3 hours of career competency training provided by the City of Newton's Human Services Division. The exact start and end dates of the program vary each summer depending on the public school calendar and other factors.

The 2026 Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship Program will run for 6 weeks - beginning the week of Monday, July 6th and ending the week of Monday, August 10th. The exact start date, end date, and internship schedule for each employment opportunity is flexible to accommodate intern and employer needs.

For Employers

Our employers are the heart of the Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship Program. Without you, we could not offer this meaningful opportunity. There are countless success stories about interns who's lives have been changed through this program - because of you.

While employers will receive the benefit of free additional professional help through this program, it is important to remember that the employer's role is also one of mentor and teacher. This program offers employers an opportunity to get the help they need while also giving back to the Newton community and supporting a young person on their career journey.

Newton's Human Services Division is here to support you, and your intern(s), for the duration of this program. Your success is our success. Please reach out for any reason at anytime. The best way to get in touch is to email Human Services Assistant Director, Meri Haas at mhaas@newtonma.gov.

*While we do our best to provide you with the number of interns that you have requested, our funding is limited. It is important that you understand that there is a possibility that we will be unable to place an intern at your worksite. Currently, we are only able to offer internships to 20-25 youth across the entire City of Newton.

The Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship program offers real work experience to Newton youth. To this end, employers must be able to provide the following:

  • A clear job description for each available position;
  • Three interview screening questions to assist with the selection process;
  • Assistance with final interviews and the intern selection process;
  • 18-20 hours of work per week for the duration of the program;
  • Appropriate training for intern, as needed;
  • A designated intern supervisor;
  • Regular check-ins with the intern during the program;
  • Confirmation of hours worked by signing off on weekly timesheets;
  • Regular communication with the Newton Human Services Division.

This program aims to employ new participants each summer. For most participants this program is their first job experience. For this reason, the Human Services Division requires participants to attend weekly career development workshops. Topic examples include, how to communicate with your boss, budgeting, self-care on the job, goal setting and organization.

  • Employers are required to schedule their intern's work hours around the career development workshop schedule. This summer's workshops have been scheduled on Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Newton City Hall.

Employers are not required to hire program interns. All hiring and payroll will be handled by our partner organizations. Your only responsibility related to payroll will be to sign timesheets.

Employers and direct supervisors are also required to attend a 30-minute zoom orientation prior to the start of the program. Employer handbooks will be provided.

New This Year! All external employers (non-municipal departments) will be required to sign a Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship Program Placement Agreement before an intern can be placed at your site.

*Please note, submitting an application does not guarantee that your worksite will be accepted into the program or that an intern will be placed with you. While we do our best to provide each employer with an intern, our funding is limited. It is important that you understand that there is a possibility that we will be unable to place an intern at your site. This determination is made based on many variables, including whether any youth applicants show interest in your position(s).

To learn more about the selection process, read the "Application & Selection Process" tab under the "Application & Selection Process" section below.

Application & Selection Process

Please direct all interested program applicants to this page.

Eligible participants are between 16 and 18 years of age at the start of the program (mid-June), live in Newton or attend Newton Public Schools and are eligible to work in the United States.

It is important to note that some young people experience greater barriers to employment and workforce development opportunities. Newton’s YouthWorks Internship Program aims to support those individuals by prioritizing applicants who identify as or have experienced one or more of the following:

The child of a single, working parent; housing insecurity; low income; homeless or runaway youth; foster youth; received scores of levels 1 or 2 on the MCAS; having limited English skills; teen parent; juvenile arrest, been court- or gang-involved, been on probation, or involved in a Child Requiring Assistance (CRA) court case (previously known as CHINS); having a disability or special need; student on an IEP (Individual Education Plan); involved with the Department of Youth Services; involved with the Department of Children and Families; member of the LGBTQIA+ community (what does this mean?)

Each year many young people apply to the program. The Newton YouthWorks Summer Internship Program is able to offer paid internships to 20-25 Newton youth each summer. Unfortunately, space is limited and not all applicants can be accepted into the program.
