Delivered fuels (oil and propane) are subject to demand fluctuations, supply chain issues, and global markets. They tend to be significantly more expensive per unit of heat compared to electricity used by a heat pump. In addition, electric resistance heating is one of the most expensive ways to heat a home on a per-BTU basis. Heat pumps move heat rather than generate it, making them much more efficient.

Reduced carbon emissions: Burning oil and propane releases significant amounts of greenhouse gases (like CO2) and other pollutants directly into the atmosphere. Heat pumps run on electricity. Because of the mix of generating resources in the grid, using electricity to heat and cool our homes reduces carbon emissions as compared to burning fossil fuels.

Improved air quality: Eliminating on-site combustion means no direct emissions of harmful pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx) or carbon monoxide within or around the home.

Enhanced Safety: No on-site combustion means no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning or fuel leaks.

No Fuel Storage or Deliveries: Heat pumps eliminate the need for large, unsightly, and potentially leaky oil tanks or propane cylinders, along with the hassle of scheduling fuel deliveries.

Improved Comfort Year-Round: Heat pumps are designed for maintaining a comfortable temperature over time rather than rapid temperature swings. However, modern variable-speed heat pumps can respond effectively to temperature changes, and mini-splits can often heat or cool individual rooms quite quickly.
