Anyone conducting business in Newton under a name other than their own or corporate name must file a Business Certificate with the City Clerk. This form is commonly known as a "doing business as" or "DBA" certificate. The DBA allows consumers to identify and locate the proprietor of a business.
The filing fee for a Business Certificate is $35.00. Business Certificates are valid for a period of four (4) years.
To register a business:
- Sign up by creating an ID and password through the online NewGov portal here: https://newtonma.viewpointcloud.com/sign-up
- Once an account has been created, follow the instructions to apply for a Business Certificate through the online portal here: https://newtonma.portal.opengov.com/categories/1087/record-types/1006787
- Once submitted, Inspectional Services (ISD) will review the form for zoning compliance. Please note: if the business is a home-based business/office, you will be required to complete a separate Home Business/Office Affidavit through the portal (the online application instructions will direct you accordingly).
- Once you have received ISD approval, print the "Business Certificate" application document to sign. The document must be signed in the presence of a notary public.
- Attach/upload the notarized document to your online application for City Clerk approval.
- Payment: The system will prompt you for payment. Once payment is submitted registration of your business is complete.
- Online: Credit/debit card payments may be made through the online portal.
- Mail: Mail the notarized document with a check payable to “City of Newton” to: City Clerk’s Office, 1000 Commonwealth Ave., Newton, MA 02459.
- In Person: Bring the notarized document to the City Clerk's Office, 1000 Commonwealth Ave., Newton, MA 02459.
