Zach Melcher serves as the Planning Associate in the Current Planning division, where he provides zoning guidance and reviews proposed development projects across the City. He supports applicants through the special permit process and works closely with the City Council’s Land Use Committee. Zach takes pride in public service and is committed to fostering an equitable community through sustainable development.
Joining Newton’s Planning and Development team in December 2025, Zach brings experience from the Town of North Andover, where he previously worked as a Planner. He also served as a Planning Technician with the Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission, his first introduction to the planning field and a formative experience that set him on his career path. Having worked in both rural and suburban communities, Zach brings a diverse planning perspective to Newton. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Vermont.
When he’s not at Newton City Hall, Zach enjoys reading fiction, exploring new restaurants, watching movies, spending time with his friends and girlfriend, and staying active through hiking and snowboarding. He also appreciates analog hobbies like collecting vinyl records and practicing film photography.
