About Newtonville

Newtonville's village center is a large commercial area bisected by the Massachusetts Turnpike, with businesses clustered on Washington Street and Walnut Street. The village includes an MBTA Commuter Rail Station, the Newton Senior Center, and is walking distance from the new Newton North High School. The Newtonville Historic District Commission and the Newtonville Advisory Committee are active in this village. The City is currently investigating the redevelopment of the Austin Street municipal parking lot for a mixed-use development that would add housing and vitality to the village center while retaining parking.

Its purposes are several: to facilitate communication between Newtonville residents and the City; to address issues of importance to Newtonville residents; and to support and foster pride in Newtonville through the sponsorship of various community activities.

Newtonville Neighborhood Advisory Committee
- Neighborhood advisory committees (NAC) in Newton's four CDBG target neighborhoods work with housing and community development staff on the development of the five-year Consolidated Plan and the Annual Action Plan. Their input is critical on identifying the needs in their neighborhood and developing priorities, strategies and projects that address those needs. The committees also serve in an advisory capacity for the implementation of projects in their neighborhood.

Newtonville Local Historic District and Commission - Newtonville has been recognized as an architecturally important and intact historic neighborhood displaying examples of many late 19th and early-20th century residential architectural styles. The Commission holds public meetings.

NNHS Neighborhood Parking Plan - The Newton North Neighborhood Parking Plan encompasses an area of about 40 streets in Newtonville. This plan was developed over the course of two years through a series of community meetings, and the plan was rolled out in summer 2013. New parking regulations were put in place, superceding an outdated series of parking restrictions in the neighborhood. The plan features a permit override option available to residents and a limited number of non-residents (i.e., NNHS students). The plan continues to change as needed, and maps and information are on the plan website.

Car School Traffic and Parking PlanThis parking plan was approved by Traffic Council in May 2014.  However, traffic and parking conditions will be closely observed and changes will be made as needed.
