Board of Aldermen change name to City Council

On January 1, 2016, the Board of Aldermen, the City’s Legislative body, officially changed its name to City Council.  The Board’s role and function within the City of Newton will remain the same.  Last year, the Board approved the change of name to City Council and its members to be called City Councilors to provide a more gender neutral title for the City’s Legislators, and the Massachusetts State House approved the request.  The 2016-2017 City Council were sworn in at Noon on January 1, 2016 at Newton City Hall and the City Councilors will hold their first meeting of the year on Monday, January 4, 2016.
