Winter Weather Information

• Snow related requests should be reported through Newton’s online reporting system by visiting www.newtonma.gov and clicking on the 311 icon.

• Make sure any vents for your furnace, fireplace, or wood stove are clear of snow and ice so they function properly, and never run your car unless it’s completely clear of snow and ice including the area around the tailpipe. Early symptoms of CO poisoning are nausea, confusion, headaches, and dizziness. If you experience any symptoms or if your carbon monoxide detector goes off, get to fresh air and call 911 immediately.

• Within 30 hours of the end of a storm, residents are reminded to clear paved sidewalks abutting their property and are asked to please clear your nearest fire hydrant. Please do not shovel snow back into the street. Residents are asked to be aware that during plowing operations, some snow may block previously cleared sidewalks and driveways.

• Homeowners who are both physically and financially unable to clear their sidewalk may qualify for the Snow Exemption Program. For more information, please call the Department of Senior Services at 617-796-1660.

• Businesses are reminded that they are required by City ordinance to clear abutting sidewalks and handicap access ramps of snow and ice within 24 hours following a storm. Failure to do so could result in fines.

• If your roof needs to be cleared of snow, please have a professional remove the snow.

• Please be sure to check on elderly neighbors and friends who may need assistance.

• When operating snow blowers, please use caution and never try and clear a clogged snow blower with your hand.
