Contractor Referral

Spring Cleaning “To Do” Lists Overwhelming?

Newton Senior Services Home Contractor Referral Program has created a resource listing of pre-screened and approved contractors who will provide basic home and yard repair, maintenance, and adaptation services that residents 60 and over may need in order to remain safe and independent as they choose to age in Newton.

The Newton Department of Senior Services received a Title III grant from Springwell that enabled us to initiate the project.   This list of contractors is provided to older residents by calling the Center.

An exciting development has been a new collaboration with the Town of Weston.  The Weston Council on Aging has received a similar grant from Springwell to initiate the project for Weston residents and to partner with Newton to enhance the current list and to add new types of contractors to the list.

Contractors are screened for the appropriate state licensing through the Massachusetts OCABR, current insurance, and checked for complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the state Attorney General’s office.  Three references from each contractor are obtained and checked as well.

Our goal, in addition to providing the list itself, is to educate seniors in hiring and working with contractors to enable them to age in their homes with safety and dignity.  Along with the list, callers will receive an information packet that discusses the specifics that should be included in any negotiations with contractors coming into your home.

The list itself is a work in progress.  We will continue to add to it over time, and welcome referrals for contractors with whom residents have had a good experience.

The current list, which originally included Electricians, Plumbers, Handyman Services and Snow Removal contractors, has been expanded to include Landscapers/Tree Services.  Lists in development are focusing on landscapers, roofers, exterminators/pest control, and paving/masonry.  As the new lists become available we will update our monthly newsletter and the Department of Senior Services web site (www.newtonseniors.org).
