The City of Newton is embarking on a project to plan, design, and construct roadway, sidewalk, and streetscape improvements in the heart of historic West Newton Square for construction in 2018/2019.
Thank you to everyone who has been involved in the Concept Design & Detailed Design phases. On Wedensday, November 29, 2017, the project team will present the plans to the City Council's Public Facilities and Public Safety & Transportation Committees for consideration and possible vote. The staff memo to the Council and supporting graphics are available here for review. City Staff continues to respond to questions about this project at firstname.lastname@example.org and will be at L'Aroma Cafe on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 from 4pm - 6pm to answer questions.
The goals of the project include:
The project will study, and develop recommendations for, the “Greater” West Newton Square area, including areas both north and south of the Turnpike and including the two Washington Street bridges. These are likely to be longer-term recommendations to be considered for construction in years beyond 2017/2018 and will likely involve multiple State agencies as well as the City.
For construction in 2017/2018, the City is committed to enhancing the core of West Newton Square along Washington Street from Lucas Court to Chestnut Street. The City has put a placeholder in the 5 year capital improvement plan (CIP) of $3-4 million for this project.
National Grid has given notice to the City of Newton that the utility gas line improvement work on Washington St. in West Newton is anticipated to begin on Monday May 22, 2017. This is an important first step in the construction of the enhancements project to ensure that the newly improved roadway is not subsequently disrupted for important utility work. National Grid and Feeney Brothers will be performing infrastructure upgrades in the area of 1250 to 1397 Washington St, Newton, MA:
