The EDC is proud to announce the 2012 Business Excellence Awards, established to recognize and pay tribute to businesses, organizations, and individuals who have contributed to and expanded the vitality of the City's village centers, advanced business attraction, and improved the overall economic climate of the City. The Awards Ceremony will be held in the War Memorial, Newton City Hall on Thursday, October 18, 2012 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Read the Press Release.
- Business Attraction Subcommittee - focused on identifying and targeting industries and business sectors, regional partnerships, existing medium/large company growth, and the BioReady Communities program.
- Small Business Incubator Initiative - During the Spring 2012 semester, the EDC engaged students from the Suffolk Law School and the Suffolk University Sawyer School of Business to study the feasibility of a small business incubator in Newton. Their finding included feasibiliy, incubator structure, business member qualifications, funding, legal considerations, and opportunities for partnership with local universities. Click on these links for the Suffolk Final Report and Suffolk Final Presentation. The EDC is taking this valuable research and continuing to explore the incubator concept.
- Economic Development Self-Assessment Tool (EDSAT) - ongoing 2011-2012. Developed by the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University, the EDSAT is a secure online tool that offers a robust analysis of local characteristics and processes directly linked to a municipality's potential to attract private investment. Results will help the EDC advise the City on strategic steps to maximize economic development opportunities and actively pursue responsible and innovative business expansion to enhance the City's tax base.
