The Economic Development Commission was established by City ordinance with a mission to promote and develop business and industry for the purpose of strengthening the local economy, providing jobs, and expanding the City's tax base. The Commission promotes, assists, and encourages existing and new business, industry, and commerce in Newton and advises and makes recommendations to City officials and staff. The Commission usually meets at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month in Room 209 of City Hall, and meetings are open to the public.

The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 in Room 204 at City Hall.

2015 Business Excellence Awards

We are now accepting nominations for the 2015 Business Excellence Awards.   To nominate your favorite business go to Award Nominations.

Mayor Warren and the  Economic Development Commission (EDC) will host the fourth annual Business Excellence Awards on October26th from 5:30 - 7:30 PM at the Atrium Center, 300 Boylston Street, Newton, MA.

Award Categories – Awards will be given out for the following categories:

1.      Village Business Award:  This award is given to businesses that have contributed to the vitality, business attraction, and sense of place in any of Newton’s village centers.

2.      Destination Business Award:  This award is given to a business, located outside of a village center (including, but not limited to Needham Street and Route 9), whose unique business offering attracts commerce to their locale.

3.      Corporate Awards:  These awards are given to area businesses, property owners, organizations and/or individuals whose notable work is contributing to strengthened economic activity in the City.

N2 Corridor Award – This award will be given to a business instrumental in the advancement of this innovation district which includes Newton Highlands, Wells Avenue and Echo Bridge in Newton. 
    b.  Charles River Mill District Award-  This award will be given to a business instrumental in the launching of the new Charles River Mill District, an innovation district that includes Nonantum (Newton). 
    c.  Innovation Business Award – This award will go to a business (or individual) responsible for bringing innovative business practices to Newton.  This may include businesses new to Newton or who support an “innovative economy”.

4.      Citizen Champion Award: This award is given to a Newton individual whose contributions and efforts have supported Newton’s existing business community, expanded the vitality of the City’s village centers, advanced business attraction, and/or improved the overall economic development climate of the City. 

5.      Community Business Award:  This award is given to a non-profit organization whose efforts have contributed to Newton’s business and economic development health. 
 

Eligibility: Any individual, business, or organization involved in Newton's business community is eligible to be nominated for a Business Excellence Award from the EDC with the exception of last year's award recipients. Nominations must be for business and efforts made by individuals currently active in the City. Self-nominations may be submitted to recognize one's own business efforts. Applications for nominations which do not receive an award may be re-submitted in future years. Nominations are limited to one category; please submit separate applications to nominate a business for more than one category. The Business Award selection will be conducted by the Economic Development Commission in September. Nominees who are selected to receive Business Excellence Awards will be notified of their selection by mid-September. Economic Development Commission members, staff, and their families are not eligible to be nominated for an award (though they may submit nominations). The EDC will limit the awards to those nominees that meet the selective criteria established. Not all categories may be awarded each year.
