Economic Development Commission

Economic Development Commission

The Economic Development Commission was established by City ordinance with a mission to promote and develop business and industry for the purpose of strengthening the local economy, providing jobs, and expanding the Citys tax base. The Commission promotes, assists, and encourages existing and new business, industry, and commerce in Newton and advises and makes recommendations to City officials and staff. The Commission usually meets at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month in Room 209 of City Hall, and meetings are open to the public.

Current projects and documents
  • Small Business Support Subcommittee - focused on policies and outreach to assist existing business owners, revitalize village centers, and promote Newton's thriving business community. The EDC is very proud to host the annual Business Excellence Awards in October.
  • Business Attraction Subcommittee - focused on identifying and targeting industries and business sectors, regional partnerships, existing medium/large company growth, and the BioReady Communities program.
  • Small Business Incubator Initiative - During the Spring 2012 semester, the EDC engaged students from the Suffolk Law School and the Suffolk University Sawyer School of Business to study the feasibility of a small business incubator in Newton.  Their finding included feasibiliy, incubator structure, business member qualifications, funding, legal considerations, and opportunities for partnership with local universities.  Click on these links for the Suffolk Final Report and Suffolk Final Presentation.  The EDC is taking this valuable research and continuing to explore the incubator concept.
  • Economic Development Self-Assessment Tool (EDSAT) - 2011-2012.  Developed by the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University, the EDSAT is a secure online tool that offers a robust analysis of local characteristics and processes directly linked to a municipality's potential to attract private investment. Results will help the EDC advise the City on strategic steps to maximize economic development opportunities and actively pursue responsible and innovative business expansion to enhance the City's tax base.
