In November 2012 the citizens of Massachusetts approved a voter referendum legalizing the sale of marijuana for medicinal purposes in the Commonwealth and in the following year the State Department of Public Health (DPH) created an extensive set of regulations governing the siting and manner of operation for such “registered marijuana dispensaries” (RMDs). Newton developed its own local regulations regarding RMDs in December, 2013. These regulations govern where an RMD may locate in Newton and establish the criteria necessary for such a facility to receive a permit from the Board of Aldermen. The following documents and links provide additional information on State and City regulation of RMDs
Newton received a special permit application to locate a RMD at 697 Washington Street on May 14, 2014. The Planning Department is
currently reviewing the special permit application and will post public documents to this page. As part of the special permit process, a public hearing was held on June 17, 2014, and a second public hearing is scheduled for October 7, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Aldermanic Chambers, Newton City Hall. For additional information please contact the Newton Planning and Development Department at 617-796-1120.
