28 Austin Street

The City of Newton and Austin Street Partners have come together as a partnership for this exciting mixed use project at 28 Austin Street in Newtonville, the site of a long-standing public parking lot. Austin Street Partners will construct mixed-income housing and new retail space, restore the parking lot, and work with the community to design and construct two new public spaces. When construction is finished,  the City of Newton will retain ownership of the property and maintain and operate the public parking lot as it has in the past. A project of this size involves considerable preparation and planning (see approximate timeline below).  A Liaison Committee has been formed to continue the dialogue with the community throughout construction.

As construction gets closer, there will be periodic updates about the project, including the agendas for upcoming Liaison Committee meetings. Occasionally, there will also be times when Alerts are sent out to provide quick updates on specific timely topics: e.g. the start of the shuttle bus service to Aquinas School Parking Lot, or temporary lane closures. Liaison Committee

The Liaison Committee will next meet on January 10, 2017. Future meetings will be announced here. Minutes of past meetings are listed in the Archives section at the bottom of this page. 

Members of the public are encouraged to attend Liaison Committee meetings. Public comment will open at the beginning of  meeting. If you cannot attend, please email the chair, Jake Auchincloss, at jauchincloss@newtonma.gov with your comment or question.

As part of the Building Permit process, the Liaison Committee is charged with reviewing the following items, all of which are available here:

1. Building Plans
2. Construction Management Plan & Interim Parking Plan (plans & text)
3. Business Engagement Plan

The City of Newton is conducting its reviews simultaneous to the distribution of these documents to the Liaison Committee in December 2017.


28 Austin St Project Timeline

A Spring 2018 Construction start has been announced.  

  • Fall 2016 - Winter 2018: Pre-construction process: Construction Document Preparation & Liaison Committee Meetings
  • Spring 2018 - Summer 2019: Project Construction & Liaison Committee Meetings
  • Summer-Fall 2019: Tenant Leasing & Liaison Committee Meetings

Related Projects

Previously planned Newtonville street improvements will be coordinated with 28 Austin Street construction to minimize disruption.

  • Utility Upgrades in Austin Street:
    • The sewer and water infrastructure in Austin Street has been rehabilitated as part of the Citywide Infrastructure Repair Program. This work was completed between August 2016 and March 2017. more details.
  • Walnut Street Enhancements:
    • The City of Newton is embarking on a project to plan, design, and construct roadway, sidewalk and streetscape improvements for Walnut Street in the heart of Newtonville for construction starting in 2018. Working with the community, the project intends to enhance the safety, character, and functionality of Walnut Street for all users. Project includes hardscape elements: the street, sidewalks, landscaping, and lighting. Click here for more details and to participate online.
