Historic Preservation & Rehabilitation

1600 Washington Street, Auburndale, MA 02466


Preserve and rehabilitate the original slate roof, including above-roofline masonry and cast stone decorative elements, of this National Register-listed 1926 junior high school. The building has received preservation awards for its adaptive reuse as rental housing, including 21 units affordable to low-income families.


$1,082,500 CPA funds appropriated & spent (historic resources), incl. $2,500 for City of Newton legal services
$67,423 City of Newton inclusionary zoning funds
$100,000 Warren House replacement reserves
$1,249,923 TOTAL PROJECT COST (for first phase of larger total project)

20 December 1991 - The City of Newton sold this former school to the Keen Corporation/NCDF for use as housing, with a 65-year ground lease for the site:
