The City of Newton’s Division of Urban Forestry is the lead agency in the City for the care of public trees.
The Division is part of the Department of Parks and Recreation. By City ordinance the Commissioner of Parks and Recreation is the Tree Warden and has ultimate authority over City trees.
The daily duties of managing the care and custody of the City’s trees is placed in the hands of the Director of Urban Forestry.
The Director along with the Assistant Superintendent is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of most City owned trees.
Contracted services are used to prune, remove and plant trees throughout the City. Our current Tree Maintenance contractor is Northern Tree Service of Palmer Massachusetts. Our current Tree Planting contractor is Phil Mastroianni Corp. of Waltham Massachusetts.
