Position Description:

Newton is a progressive and proactive city seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator in the Department of Planning and Development to take a leadership role in facilitating a strong and effective voice for Newton's community in planning for the future of their City.  The Community Engagement Coordinator must have the ability to both think strategically about the community engagement and program design as well as having practical experience in organizing and facilitation events. Design community engagement programs for the Planning Department and for other departments engaged in implementation projects.

Develop community engagement protocols or a plan for the city.

Establish a program of more continuous community communication for City Planning and plan implementation.  This includes presentation, website development, update, and maintenance, and other tools as identified.  A new Planning Department website will be a central part of this task.

Developing planning-related education materials.

Serve as a coach for Planning Department and other City staff in public process design, community engagement, and presentation.

Provide advice to developers on community engagement methods with the goal of expanding the use of community engagement earlier in the process and shortening development review time.

Position Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in planning, public policy, communications, or a similar field and 2 to 5 years of experience directly in community engagement for planning or urban design.  A Master's degree and at least 2 years of experience in this field.


$56,846 - $58,551 annually
