A Canoeist's Guide to the 'Lakes Region' of the Charles

A Map of the "Lakes District"

If you kept a canoe in one of the many boathouses in the Charles in the days when the river was one of Boston's premiere spots for weekend recreation and socializing, you would probably have kept a copy of this map in your gramophone case or your picnic basket.  It shows the "Lakes District," the Charles River from the last dam at Newton Lower Falls to the dam at Moody Street in Waltham.  The dams slow the river to a quiet, slow-moving pool ideal for weekend boaters.  The mapmaker included landmarks and place names -- Nightcap Corner, Keewaydin -- that are almost forgotten today, and the map's previous owner marked the channels and major streets in red.
