Introduction

Newton, Massachusetts, has long provided a welcoming home to the arts and to artists whose accomplishments have been recognized around the world. This exhibition focuses on the century between 1850 and 1950 and works of painting and sculpture by artists who were either born in Newton or spent a significant part of their lives here.

These artists were also connected to the world of art in Boston and beyond, whether for the purpose of study, exhibition, or travel. Some followed European artistic traditions, while the work of others reflected developments in American art, and, in particular, the Boston School which flourished in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

"Rediscovering Newton Artists, 1850-1950," originally mounted at the Newton History Museum at the Jackson Homestead, presents the work of more than twenty artists with stories to tell about their lives in Newton and their place in the world of art.
