James King Bonnar (1885-1961)
James King Bonnar, who lived at 49 Judkins Street in Newtonville, was born in North Adams, Massachusetts. A graduate of the Massachusetts School of Art (originally known as the Massachusetts Normal Art School and now known as the Massachusetts College of Art), Bonnar was popular as a teacher and demonstrator and active in a number of local art organizations. In 1949 he founded the Newton Art Association, which is now in its 55th year. To honor James Bonnar his family inaugurated the annual Founders Award for artistic achievement in April 2003.
