Mary Porter Bigelow (1886-1969)
Article from The Newton Graphic, October 9, 1958.
Mary Porter graduated from Lasell Seminary in Auburndale. She studied primarily with Newton artist Charles Curtis Allen, and for short periods of time with Aldro Hibbard, Marion Sloane, and Anthony Thieme.
Mary and her husband George Bigelow lived at 106 Walnut Street in Newtonville and later at 26 Holden Road in West Newton. Family took precedence over art, but her husband supported her work and in later years took up painting "in self-defense." Mary and George and their neighbors Mary and James King Bonnar exhibited at the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society in 1958 (below). Mary did not exhibit widely and preferred to give away her paintings rather than sell them.
