The Bookkeeper/Controller reports to the Director of Historic Newton which is a partnership between the non-profit Newton Historical Society and the City of Newton, with two museums, 11 staff and a $430,000 operating budget. S/he is responsible for accounts payable and receivable; payroll management; reconciliation of bank statements; other limited financial record keeping and reporting; and remaining current on nonprofit accounting and industry best practices.
Qualifications: minimum of three years of experience with accounting procedures required, non-profit accounting experience preferred. An Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent experience. Full knowledge of bookkeeping and generally accepted accounting principles. Comprehensive knowledge of and expertise with QuickBooks is essential. Detail oriented with strong initiative, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Clerk / Assistant to the Director
The Museum Clerk / Assistant to the Director is responsible for day-to-day operations of Historic Newton including visitor services, administrative duties, and data management. This position has three essential functions: operating the museum at Jackson Homestead, assisting the Director, and providing support to the Director of Development.
Museum operations includes admissions and visitor orientation, shop sales, fielding phone calls and in-person requests, requisitioning supplies, keeping the general calendar, simple bookkeeping, and tracking attendance data.
Director’s assistant duties include board communication and meeting minutes, office management, monitoring facilities, scheduling meetings, and performing other administrative functions on behalf of the Director.
This position also supports donor and membership administration. Duties include managing the donor and contacts database, processing museum donations and membership correspondence, and generating reports.
Requirements: College degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficiency in MS Office and database applications. Experience with PastPerfect or donor relations software is preferred, but fluency in general database management is required. The successful candidate will have a strong customer service ethic; a team-oriented work style; and well-developed interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. The ability to work independently to organize and prioritize multiple assignments is critical to the position as is thoroughness and attention to detail. Evening and weekend hours occasionally required.
Full-time position. Annual salary range of $40,000-$41,800. 75% of the salary as well as benefits are paid for by the City of Newton, 25% salary by the non-profit Newton Historical Society.
