Construction Update 10.25.2019

Preliminary drainage work has begun on the eastbound side of Washington Street as part of the West Newton Square Enhancement Project. The work is being performed by A. D. Paolini subcontractor for A. R. Belli, Inc.

This work includes replacing pipe in small sections near the intersection of Chestnut and Washington Streets (4-5 days) opposite Waltham Street (3-4 days) near Highland Street intersection (1-2 days) followed by the area of Mass Pike overpass (4-5 days).
Once the eastbound work is completed, the work will begin on the westbound side of Washington Street.
The current hours for construction are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
Parking restrictions on Washington Street will be in place, these restrictions will
be lifted as the work moves along the corridor.
This work will continue as weather permits.

A.R. Belli has been selected as the contractor for the West Newton Square Enhancements project.

Interested in the Construction Timeline?

Additional messages will be sent as soon as the timeline is available. At this time, we are anticipating the majority of work to begin in Spring 2020, with some small project components being implemented this fall. We don't anticipate any major impact to pedestrians, motorists or bicyclists during this phase.

Newton City Council voted in favor of this project in early 2018. The project is now advancing from planning to implementation.

The project includes the construction of roadway, sidewalk, and streetscape improvements in the heart of historic West Newton Square for construction in 2019/2020.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved in the Concept Design & Detailed Design phases.  Newton City Council voted in favor of the project in early 2018. The project is now advancing from planning to implementation. The staff memo to the Council and supporting graphics are available here for review.

The goals of the project include:

  • Improving on the existing, and somewhat confusing circulation patterns for driving and walking.
  • Applying a “Complete Streets” approach to the core area along Washington Street, in order to prioritize safety for all and meet the needs of people visiting the square and those passing through.
  • Upgrading landscape and streetscape conditions to create a more inviting and fully accessible sidewalk and business environment during the day and evening, weekday and weekend.

The project will study, and develop recommendations for, the “Greater” West Newton Square area, including areas both north and south of the Turnpike and including the two Washington Street bridges. These are likely to be longer-term recommendations to be considered for construction in years beyond this project and will likely involve multiple State agencies as well as the City.

For construction in 2019/2020, the City is committed to enhancing the core of West Newton Square along Washington Street from Lucas Court to Chestnut Street. The City has put a placeholder in the 5 year capital improvement plan (CIP) of $4 million for this project.

The anticipated timeline leading to construction:
Summer & Fall 2018
Preparing and bidding the contract
City Council vote to approve project funds
Spring 2019
Initial construction and preparation elements
Spring to Fall 2019 & Spring 2020
