Yard Waste Collections

2020 Yard Waste Collection will begin on March 23 and will end December 11. This schedule is weather dependent.

Yard waste is banned from disposal by state law; placing yard waste in the blue or green cart may result in rejection.

Yard Waste (along with trash and recycling carts) must be at curb no later than 7:00am on your collection day or as early as 4:00pm the day before. Routes can change at any time and so can your pickup time.

Keep our Lakes, Ponds and Streams Clean - Compost or Bag your Leaves!

Please bag, mulch or compost your leaves and do not rake leaves into the street (unless they are concurrently being collected by a landscaper) and never push them into storm drains. Leaves blocking storm drains can cause flooding and create safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians. Residents are encouraged to remove leaves from storm drains, if feasible; or you may call Customer Service 617-796-1000 (M-F 8:30 am – 5:00 pm) or the Utilities Division 617-796-1640 (M-F 7:00 am – 3:00 pm) to request a drain be cleared.

Leaves are an important part of the natural environment. Left on the land, leaves decompose, feeding your plants and enriching your soil. But when large amounts of leaves are washed off our lawns, down our driveways, into storm drains and into our waterbodies, they release phosphorus and nitrogen into our water, contributing to water pollution.

Recycling Your Christmas Tree

2021 Christmas tree collection will begin on January 4th through January 15th, 2021.

Each year, the City of Newton collects Christmas trees for recycling during the first two weeks of January. Collection occurs on your regular trash collection day. Place your un-decorated Christmas tree out to the curb by 7am on your collection day during this two week window. All decorations and lights must be removed and trees cannot be in a plastic bag.

While we highly encourage residents to get their tree out during the first two weeks of January, we understand that time frame does not work for everyone. If you missed the Christmas tree pickup, please request a pickup request using 311 or by calling Customer Service. Alternatively, residents can wait until April and prepare the tree according to yard waste guidelines.
