Defective meter?
By noon of next business day, call 617-796-1344. Give meter number from middle of white and green ticket. The meter will be checked by an engineer. The engineer makes a report of meter findings. Call back a week later to discover the engineer’s determination. If a police officer wrote the ticket, the meter number is located on front of ticket next to location.
How do I appeal a parking ticket/meter violation?
This is the first step after receiving a ticket.
See back of green and white ticket. A parking ticket appeal must be in writing within 21 days of receipt of the ticket, or by e-mail: parking_clerk@newtonma.gov, or download the Parking Ticket Appeal form and mail to:
Parking Clerk, Newton City Hall
1000 Commonwealth Ave.,
Newton, MA 02159.
If you cannot download the form, a writing will suffice provided it contains:
- Name
- your address
- ticket number
- license plate number
- Meter number
- location of car upon receipt of ticket,
- and reason for challenge.
What is the formal hearing procedure?
This is the second step after receiving a denial of the appeal.
See FAQ “How do I contest a parking ticket?” for step 1. If denied, you can request a formal hearing by calling the Parking Clerk at (617) 796-1344. You will be assigned a date and time to appear, at which time you may present NEW INFORMATION not previously provided in the original written appeal. The Parking Clerk will render a decision in writing within 14 days.
What if I’m dissatisfied with the result of the formal hearing?
You may file a formal appeal with the Middlesex Superior Court.
