A variety of demographic, socioeconomic, and real estate market data is available through the Newton Planning and Development Department web site. Below is an index that lists different types of information available and a general description for each category.

 

Newton Census 2000 Data

In March 2001, the U. S. Census Bureau began to release the results of the 2000 Census. The first data set to be released was the P. L. 94-171 file for each state, which comprises data needed to meet various redistricting requirements in anticipation of future local, state and federal elections.

The MISER is an interdisciplinary research institute of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. It collects vital information on Massachusetts and its cities and towns.
  • The Massachusetts Division of Employment and Training Economic Data page is an invaluable resource for finding annual employment, unemployment, and wage and establishment information on the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts.
  • To find updated 2000 data that covers topics such as poverty and income, rent and house value, educational attainment, and industry and occupation of employed residents, visit the Historical Census Data system, which is part of the HUD USER’S State of the Cities Data Systems (SOCDS) portal. The updated data is provided for 331 metropolitan areas in the country, their 542 central cities, and 11,397 suburban places, including Newton.

 

Other Useful Resources

  • The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston provides economic indicator data for the state of Massachusetts and major state metropolitan areas. Although it may not have specific data on the City of Newton, it provides useful and up-to-date benchmark statistics for states that comprise the New England region.
  • The New England Economic Partnership (NEEP) provides economic analysis for the region and publishes macroeconomic forecasts for New England and each of the individual New England states twice a year. It also provides historical data and offers analysis of quarterly data over a five-year horizon. Information ranges from real estate construction activity, home price information, and bank loans to unemployment and interstate migration.
