Position Title:   Accounting Specialist

Department:      Comptroller's

Salary:                $54,167

Responsibilities:

Performs a variety of bookkeeping and accounting activities, in support of, and under the supervision of the Comptroller and Assistant Comptroller, including payable, payroll, transfer bill, and budget transfer review and posting; posting of the weekly, semi-monthly, and monthly payroll and benefit charges to the City's general ledger; reconciliation of payroll deduction accounts and community development grant activity accounts; processing of void/return payroll checks; and maintenance of departmental files for prevailing wage reporting; budget adjustments and journal entries: and 1099-MISC vendor reporting.

Qualifications:

To effectively perform this job, an individual must possess a strong background in basic bookkeeping and accounting skills; must be able to communicate effectively with a range of internal and external parties both orally and in writing; must be comfortable working with limited supervision; and most importantly must be well organized, focused and detail oriented in order to effectively detect financial errors and/or irregularities that are likely to go undetected if not caught by the Comptroller's Office.  Associates degree and a minimum of three years of hands on bookkeeping and accounting experience required. Proficient in the use of personal computers and word process and spreadsheet software. Ability and willingness to continuously upgrade accounting and auditing skills by attending in service training.

Position Title:  Network Administrator

Department:  IT

Salary:  $64,356

Responsibilities:

Network installation, monitoring and support of Windows Desktops, and Windows and Linux Servers.  Troubleshoot system availability/network connectivity issues.  Computer hardware and software installation, hardware repair and end user support.  Configuration of external devices including printers, smart phones and wireless routers  Provide Help Desk operations including problem logging, troubleshooting, resolution, and follow up.  Application and Microsoft Office training of municipal employees in a classroom setting.  Updating multiple websites. 

Qualifications:

Experience resolving complex software and network problems.  Knowledge of Cisco routers and HP products including servers and switches.  Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of applications.

Experience in IIS, Dreamweaver, ASP, Flash, web design and maintenance helpful, but not required.  Occasional heavy lifting.  A valid driver's license is necessary.  Perform other duties as required.  This position requires strong technical and proven leadership skills. A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent. Job experience will be considered in the absence of an advanced degree in a technical discipline. Knowledge of personal computers, programming, networking, web applications and software applications is required. Candidate must be willing to work alone as well as in a team environment. Good written and verbal communication skills are critical.

Position Title:  School Traffic Supervisor

Department:     Police

Salary:               $8193.00 per school year

Responsible for the control of motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic in school crossing areas. The Traffic Supervisor observes and reports conditions or incidents that present a potential safety hazard for the children.

 

Work Schedule: 7.5 hours per week, 43 weeks per year.

BENEFITS AND POLICIES

The City offers a comprehensive and generous benefits package to all employees working twenty or more hours per week.

Medical/Dental: We offer three options for healthcare that are paid eighty percent by the city and twenty percent by the employee.  We also offer two options for dental where the employee pays fifty percent of the premium.

Life Insurance: We provide Basic Life Insurance where both the City and the employee pay fifty percent. Supplemental Insurance is also available to all benefits eligible employees at 100% of the premium.

Employee Retirement System: The amount of 9% of the first 30k of an employees’ gross weekly wages is deducted from salary for retirement.  An additional 2% is deducted for wages exceeding that for retirement.

Flexible Spending Accounts: Health Care Accounts allow tax-free, out-of-pocket costs to be reimbursed for eyewear expenses, dental expenses, etc. Dependent Care Accounts allow tax-free costs for day care for children or adult care for elders.

Educational Assistance: Educational Assistance is available through various City of Newton Training Programs and Tuition Reimbursement Programs in conjunction with the applicable union contract, as well as Boston College Vouchers for Graduates and Undergraduates.

Family and Medical Leave Act

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to eligible employees for certain family and medical reasons. Employees are eligible if they have worked for at least one year and for 1,250 hours over the previous 12 months.

Special Leave: 15 days per year to be used for personal illness, illness in family, religious observances or personal business, (personal business days are limited to 2 per year).
