APPLIANCES and ELECTRONICS

Working computers may be donated to many organizations that have different programs to transform old or surplus computer and peripheral equipment into functional and useful computer systems for non-profit agencies and persons with low income.

Only accept equipment from companies, not individuals. All grades of computer equipment accepted. They salvage what they can to resell and recycle the rest as much as possible. They will do pick-ups of as little as a vanload in Boston . Price depends on how much it costs them to pick-up and process material minus a percentage of the money they get from reselling.

This organization exists to empower homeless, formerly homeless, and other At Risk individuals through the development and implementation of computer training curriculums . Upon completion of training, they provide job placement support in order for the participants to stabilize their vocational careers.

Accepts donations from individuals, local companies, and other institutions. Computers should be less than 5 years old, complete, but not necessarily in working order. Donated equipment is refurbished by skilled volunteers and provided, along with technical support, to grassroots community organizations in the Cambridge-Boston area. Equipment is also donated to grassroots non-governmental organizations abroad.

Laptops (less than 7 years old) are especially useful for groups that do human rights advocacy. Donated equipment is also needed for their computer repair classes. These classes are taught by high-tech volunteers and graduating students can take home a computer that they have refurbished themselves.

Accepts computers of Pentium level (minimum 133 MHz), keyboards, mice, and SVGA monitors . Your hardware donation will insure that they can both continue to train area residents in hardware troubleshooting, software applications, and to provide a quality low-cost computer to a person in need.

Large Appliances

Large appliances (commonly referred to as “white goods”), include washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, water heaters, refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, and dehumidifiers, are not picked up as trash and require a special collection. To arrange for a free pick up, please call the DPW at 617-796-1000.

Environmental Affairs will let you know what day to place your appliance to the curb for collection. Please have your appliance to the curb by 7am on your assigned day, or as early as 4pm the day before. Please help us to keep our streets clean and safe by only placing the appliance to the curb on your specially scheduled collection day.

Residents may also continue to bring appliances to the Recycling Depot on Rumford Ave.

Freon (chlorofluorocarbons) is removed from refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers and dehumidifiers in order to meet the Clean Air Act. All appliances are then sent to a local scrap metal recycling facility. For additional questions, please contact Environmental Affairs at 617-796-1471.
