Newton receives Green Community Designation from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources.
I am very proud to announce that the City's application to the MA DOER earned Newton the Massachusetts "Green Communities" designation!
Thank you!
I so much appreciate the support you provided to help get this done - both in taking up the various aspects of the DOER requirements in a timely and efficient way in Zoning and Planning, Public Facilities, Finance and Programs & Services - and in passing the resolution in support of the work the City is committed to continue and undertake in order to remain so designated.
It all mattered: the strong commitment to this effort from the mayor's office, support from the school committee and outstanding work from city department staff and some terrific volunteers who contributed to assembling the various parts: in particular the Planning, Buildings and Law Departments.
The City is now working hard to complete a grant application in time for the DOER June 4 deadline. Apparently the Governor announced a total of 35 communities who earned the designation - much more competition than we imagined would be out there.
If you would like to read any portion of the designation application, it is on the Aldermen’s webpage.
