The Board of Aldermen, Newton's legislative branch of municipal government, is made up of 24 members - sixteen at-large Aldermen and eight Ward Aldermen. Aldermen are elected every two years.

When does the Board of Aldermen Meet?

Regular meetings of the Board are held in the months of January through June and September through December on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. In the months of July and August meetings are held on the second Monday of each month. Meetings take place in the Aldermanic Chamber on the second floor of City Hall at 7:45 p.m. unless otherwise ordered. If a Board meeting falls on a legal holiday, the meeting shall be held on the next following day which is not a legal holiday.

Special meetings of the Board may be called at any time at the request of the Mayor, the President of the Board, or by any seven members of the Board, with due notice being given stating the specific subject matter.

Items to be placed on the Docket for consideration by the Board of Aldermen should be filed in the City Clerk's Office no later than 7:45 pm on Tuesday of the week preceding the meetings of the Full Board, said items will be subsequently referred to an appropriate Committee.
